How Can We Expect Any More?

Today in my morning devotional time with the Lord Jesus, I read about him, “the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick.”(Luke 5:17) This tells us that there must have been times when the incarnate Jesus did not have power available to heal the sick. He emptied himself of many of his divine prerogatives in the “kenosis” (Philippians 2:5-8):

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!

By becoming a man, Jesus could not be in more than one place at one time. He sometimes could not heal the sick because he made himself dependent on the part of the Godhead that was not incarnate. Notice the rhythms of his life: He withdrew often to be alone with his Heavenly Father. Then he would heal the sick, raise the dead, free the oppressed, and then once more withdraw to receive sustenance and encouragement from the Only One who could sufficiently give it to him.

We humans seldom even approach such a dedicated rhythm. How can we expect to receive the promise often repeated in John 15:7-8:

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

Let’s take partial fasts from the electronic “candy” and spend more time with our Lord by his Spirit so that he might shape us, encourage us, guide us, and equip us for every good work he prepared for us before the beginning of time.

I challenge myself with this even as I seek to challenge others.
