Lead the Church Now! #3 New Challenges Require New Approaches

As I write this President Obama exhibits what we are all feeling–when is this seemingly endless stream of gun massacres going to end?!? The President’s frustration and the growing anxiety of many in this country center on the inability of authorities or the Church to predict when and who might explode next. I just heard on NPR that there have been 48 mass shootings on college campuses in calendar 2015–can this be right? I know that when someone makes a habit of taking God lightly and/or dabbling in porn or other occult activities, they leave themselves open to increasing control by the one who works to kill, steal, and destroy humans. We’ve got to serve somebody and if it’s not God there is only one other possibility. For decades now porn watching has been ubiquitous. Finally enough watchers have given up enough control of themselves that the devil can twist a lie they believe into an impulse to act our their aggression and alienation. Especially when the shooter also ends up dead or asks potential victims something about God odds are this is the what is happening. I worked with a pastor to drive out demons in Okinawa when we were planting a church there. The east side of the main island has a school where many troubled people learn to levitate objects or other “counterfeit miracles.” Increasingly pastors must be prepared to deal with such issues. Teams of prayer interventionists must be trained and mentored through the process of becoming competent to drive demons out of those who are willing. Otherwise the best strategy is just to stay away. However more and more troubled people see churches and Christian colleges as targets to “take down.” I have a short training manual that I will now paste in this blog. Feel free to copy for use.

Transformational Ministry

Christ’s Plan for His People

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,

because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and

approved by men. (Romans 14:17-18)

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)

Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:30-32)

(Christ came) to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear

in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. (Luke 1:74-75)

Christ stated his mission this way:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19 NIV)

Christ also gives abbreviated purpose statements in Matt. 9:13 (This passage has to do with Jesus answering his detractors concerning his custom of hanging out with “sinners” for their salvation and healing) and Mark 2:17 (This passage also has to do with Jesus hanging out with “sinners” in order to save them rather than hanging out in religious people “ghettos” like his detractors.

Also, 1 John 3:8b tells us, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” As we know from John 10:10 the devil comes to “steal, kill, and destroy.” Christ wants to set his servants, friends, and siblings free of the works of the devil in their lives so they can fulfill His plan in them. Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31b-32).

Christ’s Truth overcomes the untruths we all believe. He is in the process of renewing the minds of his cooperators (Romans 12:2) so that we do not conform to the pattern of this world’s thinking any longer. This is the work of Christ’s Spirit in us, we are commanded to cooperate with his work in us—not quench the Spirit (1Thes 5:19 NASB).

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30).

Christ will set us free of the strongholds created by unforgiveness and other unclean habits that hold us back like giant bungee cords from godliness in our lives and fruitfulness in our service for him. (Matthew 6:14-15; Matthew18:34-35 NIV)

Finally, for those who through either ignorance or willful cooperation with the enemy of our souls have become oppressed by “the torturers” (Matthew 18:35 KJV), aka demons, Christ frees those who renounce sinful vows/oaths/ungodly sexual soul ties crying out for his deliverance. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

The following is the result of healing/deliverance by Christ:

In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble.

If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

(2 Timothy 2:20-21 NIV)

Another way of saying this is that the “buttons” that were always in us waiting for just the right stimulus to make us act compulsively or in an ungodly, carnal manner are no longer there once we have heard Christ’s word of truth. It’s like Christ deletes “bad code” on the hard drive (HD) of my heart and then inputs his freeing truth. This is not a “global fix” but specific to a particular stimulus and the associated “lie” or “ungodly belief.”

Said yet another way, when the Holy Spirit gives us a vision, dream, audible voice, or most commonly, the still small voice or “just knowing” of truth, we are less reactive to negatively stressful situations that we were previously vulnerable to.

Four Obstacles to Glorifying Christ as a Disciple and Minister of the Word (Logos & Rhema: in this age these are the written Word of God which is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword separating even to the division of soul and spirit, bone and marrow (Hebrews 4:12 ESV); and the Word of God spoken with power either directly by the Holy Spirit or the Spirit through his prophetically-gifted servant)

  1. Curses from the sins of the fathers (Ex. 20:5-6 NIV)—the effects of these may be seen to the third or fourth generation and often appear as “soul wounds” or other impediments to living and serving in freedom.
  2. Ungodly, untrue beliefs (Ps 62:1-5; Isaiah 55:7; Rom 12:2; )—these are the heart held beliefs that each of us have that can short circuit Christ’s truth actuating in our lives in certain situations.
  3. Wounds of the heart (Ps 34:18; 147:3; Isaiah 61:1) à Unforgiveness (Matthew 6:14-15; 18:34-35 NIV) à Root of bitterness poisoning community (Heb 12:14-15 NASB) à Unforgiveness is a highway for demonic influence in even a believer’s life
  4. Demonic oppression (Matthew 6:14-15; 18:34-35; Mark 16:17-20; Luke 4:18; Acts 5:16; 8:7; 1 John 3:8 NIV) à Demons manipulate the lies we hold onto in our minds robbing us of the joy, peace and godly living Christ died to give each of us (see the following graphic diagram of a human being)
